I am in no way saying the original poster is doing anything shady but a cpl of months ago there was someone selling home depot gift cards on Craigslist and when you went into the store to verify they were good it all cheked out. However when you went in a few weeks later to use the gift card if was discovered that it was bought with a stolen credit card and had been cancelled. Just giving a little reminder to keep your eyes open thats all

It also has happened to many other retailers. My friend is retail manager and a notice when out to all stores to be warry of $1000 Giftcards being bought on stolen credit cards. They cashiers are being instructed to ask for cash or decline the sale.

It's probably better that you didn't.

When will people learn there are no shortcuts in life.
If it is too good to be true the it probably is.

I received a Cadillac Fairview gift card for Xmas 2 years back. There was no expiry date. However after 12 months they start charging monthly service charges. By the time I got around to using it 50% had been eaten up by the service charges.
Make sure you read the terms closely.

That's not allowed anymore.

There is also a Tim Hortons gift card scam on Kijiji, similar offer, $200 card for $100, meet at Tims to check amount on card and everything checks out, next day the $200 balance disappears.

Does this mean that a gift card is legally good for forever and the cash value cannot be reduced by "maintenance" or other weird charges?

Good thing nobody ended up getting this card. I am a retail manager, gift cards being purchased in such large denominations are 99% of the time fraudulent in one way or another. Any organization will pull the amount off the gift card when they determine they aren't getting paid for the gift card. (either from fraudulent/stolen credit cards, internal theft, etc.)

Make sure you read the terms closely.Same thing happened to me. That is BULLSHIT. Don't leave it alone. Go to the general manager of one of their malls and demand a full credit. If you are persistent ,they will give in.

That can't be true. What if I got a legit $1000 card for my Bday?
If it was purchased on a stolen card, then the cashiers are probably advised to call management and the police, but they can't refuse gift cards if they sell them. Your source must be confused.

A lot of stores are relying on the "hassle factor" to stop you from being persistent:mad: . Same idea with the "mail in rebate". Too much hassle for many busy people to bother with mail-in rebates.

How did you make out? I sold 2 $500 Lowes gift cards on eBay. I live in the US. They seem to sell at a 10% discount to face value. I got about $450 for ea. Seems to be a lot of gift cards for sale there.
