The gas prices are killing all canadians, due to which now the money for hobbying is also getting lesser and lesser due to high cost of gas these days.
Steven Harper's Govt. should immediately act and cap atleast GST on Gas which would atleast give us an incentive of 2-cents less, because the present prices of gas is not at all affordable, thus using a premium car for me is becoming a bit of a financial burden on myself and my wallet.
An early action by the present regime to my proposal would be welcomed by one and all terbites in particular and by all canadians.

I've got a much better idea: how about we enact legislation that states that since Canada has the second highest oil reserves in the world and domestic need is a pitiful drop in the bucket compared to total output, that Canadian oil should be supplied to Canadians at a rate that reflects domestic production cost as opposed to world influences that have absolutely no bearing on the actual oil we use to fuel everything. Once the oil is sold on the world market then those bastards in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland can sell at the ultra-inflated world commodity rate but Canada should be taken care of first. Then we could still reap taxes for health care or highway projects and have prices that would still be down around 60 cents.

The problem isn't the taxes; it's the greedy pricks in the oil industry bleeding us dry for our own pleniful natural resource.

I think that would violate NAFTA... and the oil rich provinces would never accept a lower price than what they can get on the open market

Profits keep going through the roof for these bastards....it has little to do with the costr of refining, and everything to do with greed....I'm afraid once we are overr the $1 a litre for very long..it won't take long befoer we are at $2 a litre...something about that 1 dollar point psycologically (sp)

They tried that once, it was called "The National Energy Policy"

Alberta still hasn't forgotten that one and they regularly burn Trudeau in effogy

Nope, if you want to beat the high gas prices, there are only two ways.

1. Drive less, take transit.

2. Join the party and buy shares in Energy companies. Seriously. I bought this unheard of upstart energy company about 3 years ago on the TSX called "Find Energy" It's done well.

Every time the price of gas goes up, I cheer.

Sorry, it's true.

I'll have to concur. My energy investments are doing quite well also.

I think they should not lower taxes on gas, but give a rebate based on how much of a gas guzzler you drive.. the bigger the gas guzzler, the smaller the rebate

The greedy bastards raise the price simply because we'll still pay it. They just keep waiting for excuses.

Simple case in point is the time from when oil is purchased until it hits the market as gasoline. Compare jumps in oil prices to the corresponding jump in gas prices at the pumps. Without doing the research, I am sure that it takes more than a day to get the gas to market.

The only way to stop it? Don't buy it. I dare you.

(I'm still driving)

ps. as of this evening, prices are back under a dollar.

Yeah, and NAFTA has been doing a bang up job getting the USA to follow the rules on the softwood front. Perhaps it's time to choose our retaliation tactic and I think this would fit the bill nicely.

As for the oil rich provinces, they just need to be reminded that they take these resources at the acceptance of the Dominion of Canada. Right now, the dicks all get to avoid including all those revenues as part of equalization calculations (get this: NL and NS will be reaping huge money from oil/gas as well still collect big payments from equalization too!). I think supplying the rest of Canada at a modest profit instead of anally raping the rest of us isn't too much to ask in return. I don't mind if they screw the rest of the world with the rest of the oil (which would still be well over 75% of what they are producing), just not us. And to think, I read an article that said Alberta doesn't feel it's respected by the rest of Canada. Well duh, hard to respect the guy putting you in the poor house.

Of course considering our new PM used to work for Big Calgary Oil, the rest of us are just going to get screwed for his personal profit.

Do you know what else is true? All the gains you make by owning those stocks are instantly eaten up by raises in cost of living as the fuel increases raises the price of travel, products that travel by any mode of transportation, etc.

In the end, you are likely still losing money with every increase unless you own a large chunk of these companies. Sorry. ;)

The real answer?

The gas companies are charging prices the market will bear. Plain and simple.

The fact that people who drive gas-guzzling SUVs are complaining that they can't "afford" to drive them is almost laughable. If you can't afford the gas, you can't afford the vehicle. Again, plain and simple.

Yeah, but relative to everyone else who doesn't own those stocks he's coming out ahead, if not making money. ;)

Larger vehicles who pollute more should pay more for gas than smaller cars do....as is the case in many European countries.

Supply & demand folks. If the govt. were to somehow lower the price of gas people would USE MORE OF IT. That would result in an even worse problem.

If anything the govt. should rise the price of gas so that people start using it sensibly. In no way, shape, or form can Canadians (or Americans) current gasoline consumption be considered sane. All these people driving around as the sole occupant of their car just to get to work and back, etc., it's craziness.

Build more subways and give people a reason to use them.

This is a ridiculous argument , people may have bought an SUV years ago when gas was 65 cents so why is it ok to screw them now . It's not that the market will " bear " the prices it's that people have no choice they must drive so they are captive to the greed of a few people , I see nothing OK about this.

Time to sell the gas guzzling dinosaur.

I have no sympathy for anyone who bought an SUV, especially the big arrogant ones - Lincoln Navigator, Cadilac Whatever, Ford Excursion, whatever.

You wanna buy a big pig fine, but when you get 12 MPG, that's your problem.

They should make a rule that gas stations may not change their pump prices unless they get a new delivery of gas.

This will at least stop the ridiculous volatility in the GTA market.
